7 mistakes people make when trying to transform their body
When it comes to body transformation, we make many mistakes. In fact, when it comes to fitness there is an 90% drop out rate before the end of the 1st year. That is alarming statistics!
But why? Why do most of us fail to maintain our progress?
All the mistakes that I am going to talk you through, I have made myself. So, I feel in a good position to highlight them for you. These mistakes have led to a halt in my progress, a drop-in motivation and in some cases, relapse backwards somewhat.
If you can overcome these mistakes then you are going to put yourself in a much better position to truly change your body forever and therefore, live a more fulfilled life. Because I believe that there is a powerful connection between physical shape and quality of life.
️1. You are not ready to change.
So, you want to change the way you look and the way you feel. But you are not prepared to put in the work to get there. You must be willing to make small sacrifices, sometimes large. You must accept that your lifestyle is going to change.
Think about it, if you are not willing to change the way you think and act, how can you expect your body to change? You are the only person who is going to make it so, so believe in yourself and be prepared to work for it.
You are going to put time towards working, towards healthy cooking and towards mindfulness.
If you are unable to change certain things about your lifestyle then you are not going to be able to change to the outcome you are looking for.
How do you know that you are ready to change? What is your motivation like? Are you willing to put in the effort? To step out of your comfort zone? Are you willing to listen to others? To a coach? Are your goals important enough? Ask yourself these questions and if the answers are yes, then you are ready. Make it happen.
2. You are focusing too little on process goals.
Sure, it is important to keep focused on your outcome goals, which are ultimately what you want to achieve, such as dropping 2 clothes sizes or losing 3 stone. But you forget about the tasks that you need to do every single day to get there. Such as drinking your water, eating correctly, doing your exercise, daily mindfulness, etc.
Of course, it is important to have outcome goals. These are after all what we are aiming for, what creates our visions. However, they are not totally in our control. Your weight will fluctuate, whether you like it or not.
Your process goals however, are totally in your control. If you do not drink your water every day, you have no one to blame but yourself. You skip the gym? Again, no one to blame but yourself. You must take ownership of your plan and be kept accountable to executing the smaller daily tasks which, when consistently done, will lead to the achievement of your outcome goals anyway.
Focus on achieving these little wins every day and you will progress. Your process goals are the most important things. They make up your transformation plan and must be executed.
3. You are not changing your habits and lifestyle.
You may see progress as a result of a juicing diet or slimming club. But it is an error to not turn your process goals into habits. If you want to maintain these results long term then you must allow the lifestyle to change to suit these changes. If you lost weight due to reducing calories by cleaning up your meals, then it is not good reversing all of that a few months later.
This is of course, easier said than done. Too many of us simply re-ignite our previous diet, or maybe try a new one, whenever we decide we need to lose weight. But why not put yourself in a position where you do not feel you need to lose weight again?
By changing your lifestyle and your habits, you do that. You become your overall goal. That is what my clients achieve.
So, when engaging in a journey to better your body and yourself, go about it with the mindset of maintaining these changes. Decide to make changes to your diet? Ensure you can stick to it long term. Want to adjust your workout schedule? Ensure you can stick to it long term. If at any time, you are doing something that you do not enjoy or does not work for you and your lifestyle, and you are not willing to change it, then just give up and move on.
4. Working at 110% for only 10% of the time.
People go hard when they have a goal in mind. Take new year's resolutions for example. You do everything in your power to reduce body weight. Stop drinking for dry January, clean up your eating, join a gym and use it daily. You go hard but the problem is you burn yourself out and as a result it only lasts a month or two. The rest of the year you are back to your old habits of take away meals and skipping the gym.
The problem is linked to our previous mistake. You are not making a lifestyle of it. If you are putting yourself massively out of routine, by working out 2 hours a day and eating less than 1000 calories, then of course it is going to be a shock for the body and the mind. Sure, if you stuck at it you would shred fat, but at what cost? You would only give up and put it back on again as your bad habits creep back in.
If instead, we focus on working at the things that will actually get us results, our process goals, 90% of the time, then we can still get away with the odd treat, alcoholic drink or lazy day and still achieve our goals.
Work hard, sure, but ensure that you can do it consistently.
5. Not prioritizing yourself enough.
This is another way of saying 'giving yourself an excuse'. If you give yourself priority then you will find the time, the money, the energy to do what needs to be done. In life we get what we wish for if we wish for it enough. Realize the importance that body transformation is going to have on your whole life and use that as motivation. Do not let other things be more important than your own health and wellbeing.
This is probably one of the biggest mistakes that I see people make and it is one I focus on early on with my clients. As humans, we tend not to put ourselves first. Although that may sound selfless, what are the effects?
Well by not taking care of ourselves first, we are putting ourselves in a negative position both physically on our body and mentally in our head. We suffer from a lack of pride, a lack of confidence, a lack of energy. This in turn actually affects those and that we are putting first. So, although we are prioritizing other things, we are not helping them to our full potential due to our own physical and mental state.
This is why I believe that improving on your physical shape can increase the fulfilment of your life. It has done for me and it does for my clients.
By putting yourself first and by working on yourself physically and mentally, how is that going to improve on your life as a whole? Answer that question, draw from it motivation, and prioritize yourself.
6. Taking on another FAD or DIET.
We get stuck in this cycle of fads and diets. We want to lose some weight so we join a slimming club or start a juice diet only to stop a couple of months later because it is not sustainable. Then we put weight back on again and repeat. STOP. Instead, think about how you can change from the basics first, your habits and your lifestyle. Let's get results that LAST.
This is an area I feel very passionately about because as the fitness industry is among the fastest growing on the planet, a large portion of it is made up of money grabbing fads and diets designed to get you a result, briefly. Why? Because this means you keep going back, and repeat custom is a great business model. But this is criminal!
Put a stop to them by not engaging in them. You will be putting yourself into the ‘yo-yo’ category or constant ups and downs on your fitness journey.
Instead, focus on righting the mistakes we have already mentioned in this article. Build an actual plan of action that will work consistently for you and that fits your current lifestyle, wants and needs. Follow this up with regular progress tracking and keep at it. That way you will actually get the results you desire and hold onto them.
7. Trying to go it alone.
95% of people I have worked with have tried it by themselves first. January is often a quieter month for this reason too, people try themselves and then in February realize it is actually quite hard and some assistance may be valuable. I truly made progress when I started listening to and following the guidance of others. Listen to those who have been there. Work with those who can help you. Do not waste any more energy, time or resources going down the wrong route. There are many in the same position as you, reach out. A problem shared is a problem halved.
The clients I worked with; I work with for a reason. They are people who have struggled before, or who understand that to get their body transformed properly, they need to be guided, supported and kept accountable.
Because they have the guidance from a professional, the support through any tough times and the accountability to keep at it until it becomes a lifestyle, my clients see some of the best transformation results in a short space of time, but also have the ability to maintain these results for the rest of their lives.
You are good at what you do. There are people who are good at what they do. For me and people like me, it is getting you into the best shape of your life.
Avoid all the rubbish in the industry, forget trying to follow what Susan down the road did, prioritize yourself, give yourself the best possible chance of the best possible results. Make a commitment like I did and that my clients do.
Get a coach, get a partner, get a peer group, actually reach your goals
